Choose your teammates wisely

Choose your teammates wisely

When choosing groups, students know nothing about their classmates and have little time to decide. I designed the matching system for students to quickly assess their peers and discover compatible teammates, promoting trust and social interdependence.

Compatibility is based on skills, task preferences, and schedule availability.

Students currently combat social loafing through:

  • confronting underperforming team members

  • meeting solely in class or scheduling meetings based on availability

  • seeking teacher intervention

Despite their efforts, there is a lack of urgency and follow-through in enforcing consequences for failing to contribute to the group work.

To deter free riding, we implemented strict measures such as limiting team size to 5 members, providing a teacher intervention alert, and allowing students to leave a team or request a new one.

Teachers can't determine the effort and achievement level of individual students during group tasks, so they rely on peer ratings, peer evaluations, or self-reports.

However, they may be inaccurate because…

  • honest ratings can be viewed as criticizing "friends", leading to confrontation or retribution

  • students are can't distinguish between high and low contributions, leading to biased ratings

  • students give all team members equal markson a holistic evaluation

  • the ratings do not correlate with underperforming student's course grades

With HuddleUp, teachers can calculate the overall group grade and individual grades from the task manager insights, version history compilation, and AI plagiarism checker.
