People rely on mail for those important, essential, and personal moments that deserve more than a digital message. As the founding designer, I wanted to bring back the art of letter writing as a powerful time capsule for gratitude in the workplace.

By teaching how to write authentic, meaningful recognition over point sharing, our app mirrors the letter-writing process through its personal touch, reliability, and importance. Its impact includes employee motivation to progress in a career, increased worker productivity, and a renewed sense of community.

Most recognition was informal, often related to sales, and delivered through reply-all emails, clogging everyone's inboxes. Some companies expressed recognition over Slack texts, biweekly video calls, awarding badges, employee perks, and gift giving.

While these forms of recognition are timely, they lack a personal connection and action behind the words. Happy Jar wants to bridge the gap between appreciation by saying thank you with action toward helping employees find greater belonging, fulfillment, and connection.

Emails are ephemeral, easily buried, and lost (often used for quick, transactional exchanges). Text messages are made for brevity, resulting in platitudes that lack the reflection of a letter.

I wanted to introduce a new form of digital communication that streamlines notification and actively connects recognition with letter-writing, where appreciation is reciprocated back and forth for a long period.

Delayed gratification

To enhance user experience, we implemented delayed gratification by simulating the time it takes for a letter to travel globally.

Similar to the Lapse app, we included a visual tracking for an upcoming appreciation note that can only be opened after 3 days. This feature aims to build anticipation and encourage users to set aside time to read the letter, instead of being distracted by temporary notifications.

Additionally, we introduced a vibration effect when opening the message to provide haptic feedback, mimicking the tactile experience of opening a physical letter.
